Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth ii was born on 21 April 1926, and is the eldest child of King George the VI and Elizabeth Bowes- Lyon.

Her Majesty’s early years were spent at 145 Piccadilly, which was the London house taken by her parents. As well as the London house, Queen Elizabeth II also spent time at the country homes of both her father’s parents (King George V and Queen Mary), and her mother’s parents (the Earl and Countess of Strathmore).

Due to her grandfather, King George V’s death in 1936, and his eldest son King Edward VIII relinquishing the throne in order to marry the woman he love, her father had been crowned King, resulting in Princess Elizabeth being next in line to the throne. In 1952, the Princess was appointed Colonel- in Chief of the Grenadier Guards, and on her 16th birthday she carried out her first public engagement inspecting the regiment. Princess Elizabeth had married Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark in November 1947. While visiting Kenya on the 6th February 1952 the Princess had received news of her father’s death meaning that she would be taking the throne.

Queen Elizabeth’s coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on 2nd June 1953 at the age of 25. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip have 4 children: Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward. They also have 8 grandchildren: Peter and Zara Phillips, Prince William (Duke of Cambridge) and Prince Harry, Princess Beatrice of York and Princess Eugenie of York; and Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. The Queen and Prince are also great grandparents to Savannah Phillips, Prince George and Princess Charlotte
